The Semi-Slav — 1.d4 d5 2.c4 c6 3.Nf3 Nf6 4.Nc3 e6 — builds an unbreakable d5 strongpoint, then detonates it: the ...dxc4 and ...b5 Meran expansion and the legendary Botvinnik System (5.Bg5 dxc4 6.e4 b5) produce some of the most analyzed, double-edged positions in all of chess. It is the rare defense that is simultaneously rock-solid and a genuine winning attempt, which is why it has anchored world championship repertoires from Botvinnik to Kramnik.

Is the Botvinnik System still playable for amateurs?
It is the sharpest mainstream opening in chess — material imbalances, opposite-side pawn races, and 25 moves of known theory. Amateurs can absolutely play it, but should expect to lose some games to preparation while learning. The Moscow (5.Bg5 h6 6.Bxf6) and Anti-Meran (5.e3) are calmer entry points.
What is the idea of the Meran Variation?
After 5.e3 Nbd7 6.Bd3 dxc4 7.Bxc4 b5, Black grabs queenside space with tempo on the bishop and prepares ...a6 and ...c5, hitting the center from the wing. The play is thematic: Black's queenside pawn storm and c5-break race against White's central e4-e5 expansion.
