Bird's Opening, 1.f4, grabs e5 from the flank — a Dutch Defense with an extra tempo. White typically continues Nf3, e3, Be2 or the double fianchetto, building toward the stock kingside attack that the f-file rook joins with decisive effect. Its one tactical landmine defines it: From's Gambit, 1...e5!?, when 2.fxe5 d6 unleashes a ferocious attack that every Bird player must have an answer to (most simply transpose to a King's Gambit with 2.e4).
